Operation of engine oil without additives is absolutely impossible! Independent input of purchased additives is necessary for our motor as a tablet for a person – it will help the sick, but healthy-to nothing. You can watch some review of the best engine oil additive and choose which one is better for you.
Historical information
The attitude of a car enthusiast to additives for auto oils is different: from complete rejection to fanatical delight. Where did they come from and why? Until 1933, engines used only conventional petroleum oils for lubrication without any additives. With the introduction of supercharged diesel engines, there was a difficulty – combustion of the piston rings. Then chemistry came to the rescue. The first additive with a washing effect was created on the basis of aluminum naphthenates. It is part of the diesel oil. Almost at the same time, the question of oxidative stability arose. The reason was initially low engine efficiency. Increasing the operating temperature allowed to increase it. But petroleum oils were already oxidized at a temperature of 120°C. So in 1940, the automobile has gained antioxidant additives. This was the beginning. The process has started!
Their types and effects.
Engine oil can be improved in two ways:
– improve the quality of the Foundation;
– to introduce the additives (alloying).
Additives for engine oil can vary its properties very widely. They can be used to produce a wide range of lubricants that meet the requirements of various mechanisms. Modern synthetic motor oils or mineral oils are a colloidal, well-balanced solution of numerous components (additives) in the base-base. Additives for motor oils by mass content are up to 25% of the base, and their number reaches eight different compounds. No modern product is complete without them. Some additives control physical properties, while others produce chemical effects. Some mutually complement and strengthen each other, and some have the opposite effect. Balanced additive compositions-packages are usually supplied for production. Their composition and purpose are clearly defined.
The viscosity of motor oils is its most important characteristic. It affects the loss of carbon monoxide, liquid and boundary friction, pumpability and fluidity. The viscosity of ordinary petroleum oil from -20° to 100°C changes a thousand times, so there is no question of its year-round operation. The situation changed in 1951 with the introduction of all-season oils. Polymer additives were introduced into the low-viscosity base, which provided the required viscosity at high temperatures.
In addition to anti-stick, anti-oxidant and viscous additives, motor oil for cars must contain several other mandatory types of additives.
These are anti-friction additives that reduce friction and wear of parts.
Depressors-reduce the pour point of the product.
Anti-foam-do not allow the oil to foam at high temperatures.
As you can see, the operation of engine oil without additives is absolutely impossible! Independent input of purchased additives is necessary to our motor as a tablet for a person – it will help the sick, but healthy-to nothing.
